[Dragonboard APQ8094] getseial cannot retrieve serial num

I tried running the getserial binary on my Dragonboard 8094 (running Android L), but I'm getting the following error:

shell@msm8994:/data # ./getserial
./getserial
Could not retrieve serial num
255|shell@msm8994:/data #
Any ideas what might cause this?

Have you tried running as root? In the shell, type su the run getserial again
