I see the new GPU binary release uses the kk_3.5 branch rather than the partner Google hammerhead branch. Does this mean that there are other changes not included in the changelog or is that really it?

The branch change actually happened with the April release, which has a much longer changelog. That's where you'll find the differences between the branches.
Oh, guess I didn't look at the strings for those. Thanks for the continued support for a bunch of devices. These are awesome on the M8.
