Same question.
Any updates on when iOS-version libraries would be released?
Same question here.
The results of profiling many core OpenCV functions on mobile devices are, shall we just say, interesting, compared to how they could perform. Right now, our game on mobile devices is getting hammered by the use of some OpenCV functions when trying to hold framerate, with many tens of milliseconds being spent in OpenCV functions in some frames. This isn't as simple as just float/double. It's a catalogue of redundant std::vector operations, and death by many other performance issues. When you're shooting for 30fps (and could hold that, given ~15ms of computer vision per frame...) having a 150ms computer vision phase is a problem...
Looking at the API documentation, I'd love to replace some of those OpenCV implementations with FastCV (stand up adaptive threshold and cv::ColumnSumFilter...), but without an iOS implementation I've basically got no choice but to re-implement them myself anyway, because we need to ship both Android and iOS.
There's a good couple of weeks of engineering time to re-implement what we need in C - more if we need to vectorize the implementations. If FastCV is going to be released on iOS in the near future then we'll hold and profile using that. If not, then it's time to roll up sleeves and get coding, but I'd rather not duplicate your work if possible.
We will be releasing an iOS release for FastCV, June 2012.
Awesome, thank you. I'll optimize the functions that don't have a direct mapping between OpenCV and the FastCV API now, and wait until June for those that do. Thanks for the help!
Hi,
Just checking if you're still on track for a June FastCV release. If you're not that's fine but it would be nice to know so we can prioritize tasks appropriately for our launch schedule.
Thanks,
Alex
Waiting... it is June now, waiting... ^_^
I too am anxiously awaiting news on the FastCV release for iOS.
Is it still coming?
What a disappoint!
A year before, somebody said FastCV for iOS will be released on June 2012, but now it is only for Android...
It just a joke!
Alex,
Unfortunately we haven't been able to release our iOS port of FastCV by June as initially planned. I apologize.
We are still working on an iOS port of our SDK. Our latest development estimate is that our iOS version will be available by late summer.
Sincerely,
Mike
No worries - thanks for the update. I'll rewrite what I need now then look at harvesting from you guys later in the year.
Is there any problem if I use vuforia just for its CV capabilities on iOS until FastCV is out. I am aware that is maybe a strange question, but I find the process of using Vuforia much much more pleasant then embedding openCV in my project to recognize markers. I do not need to show any 3d models or even the camera output, just need to trigger an action once the user holds the camera over a certain object that is easily recognizable.
Thoughts?
Vuforia is best suited for AR applications. If you find you don't need the low level functionalities provided by FastCV, and Vuforia gives you all the features you need to accomplish your task, then why not go for the convenience of Vuforia?
This was just an idea how to bridge the time until the FastCV is available for iOS. I assume this must be any day now. But I realized actually that I can't use Vuforia anyways since I need to able recognize objects via the iphone front camera, vuforia only makes use of the back camera.
We'd love to help beta test the iOS implementation for you. Is there somewhere we can apply for beta access?
Any news about this?
Any updates please on FastCV for iOS?
I need to be able to do face recognition and from what I understand I need FastCV to do this. Are there any alternatives that I can look at? Whether it is manually bringing in libraries to Vuforia or should I look at another SDK altogether? It is getting to be too long of a wait for this to be available unfortunately.
Really want to know when iOS version will be released
