Current consumption is a fairly good guide. Expect ~2mA when the CPU is 100%.

but how does that give cpu utilization?
isn;t the cpu *always* doing 'something'?
what i need is the time it is spending in 'idle loops' or not doing useful stuff..
also wouldn;t current be most strongly correlated with TX and RX activity, not just 'non-idle time'?

No. Usually (hopefully) the CPU is asleep. When you break into execution with the xIDE debugger you'll almost certainly find it at the SLEEP instruction. That uses different amounts of current depending on the sleep_mode you've selected.
i would want to know it because i had a suspicion that due to my added application code, it may be overloaded with computations and work.
i experienced "link_loss" disconnects for no known reason, if i could rule 'cpu overloading' out (or in), it would help.

You can use PIO high/low to monitor your main work in the CPU.
Then monitor that by an external oscilloscope.
