Qualcomm Developer Network December Developer of the Month is the team at Waves Audio, based in Tel-Aviv, Israel.

Waves is the world’s leading developer of audio plugins and signal processors for the professional and consumer electronics audio markets. The current Waves product line now includes over 250 proprietary processors that have been embraced by the audio industry in music production, film, post production, broadcast and beyond.

The Waves Consumer Division, under its Maxx brand, is committed to transforming the consumer electronics listening experience. By implementing cutting-edge DSP technologies on a broad range of devices, Waves is putting professional, studio-quality processors directly into the hands of users, and setting new sonic standards.

We spoke with Amir Ben Kiki, Sr. Product Manager about what Waves is currently working on, and how the Qualcomm® Hexagon™ DSP is aiding in their development.

How was Waves Audio started?
Waves was founded back in October 1992 by Meir Shaashua and Gilad Keren. Its debut product was the world’s first software audio plug-in, the Q10 Paragraphic equalizer, which soon became an audio industry standard. Since that time Waves has continuously been developing top-tier sound processing technologies for the professional and consumer audio industries.

Waves products have always emphasized audio quality above all else. The same standards of auditory excellence have been our hallmark both in the professional audio industry as well as in consumer audio enhancements.

What makes Waves Audio different?
In the office, Waves emphasizes creativity and innovation. The vast majority of our employees come from a musical or audio engineering background. Musical instruments are ubiquitous in Waves’ corridors, in just about any office you can find a guitar or a keyboard. Where does your team get inspiration?
We are motivated by our mission to keep pushing the boundaries of digital audio processing on all fronts. Whether it is innovative tools for professional audio production or professional grade audio algorithms for the mass market we are continuously delivering new standards of audio quality to our customers.

How did the Hexagon DSP SDK help in your development?
The Hexagon SDK helps us develop and test audio processing modules so that our uncompromising standards of audio quality are met. The SDK has fine examples and documentation designed to reduce development time and refine our development processes and methodologies.

With dynamically loadable modules and module control using Android AudioManager it is not necessary to rebuild the DSP FW any time a module changes. It is also independent from DSP version and driver's data structures used to retrieve and modify parameters. This makes integration faster and gives us the ability to rapidly support our customers and fine-tune our algorithmic performance for each platform using Snapdragon™ mobile platforms.

Implementing our technology as a CAPI_V2 module has made the integration flexible and easier for developers. We intend to continue adopting Qualcomm Developer Network tools in order to ensure compatibility and flexibility of our portfolio on Snapdragon based devices.

Where do you see the audio industry in 10 years?
We see great advancement in natural speech and language recognition changing the way users interact with their devices. This coupled with the ubiquity of smartphones and virtual reality devices leads us to believe that the industry will see a huge transformation in the coming decade favoring adaptive algorithms and spatial audio.
