FEATURE STORY
Write app. Optimize. Publish. Get paid. Repeat.
We’re trying to make life that simple for you, so we’ve changed a few things recently:
- We’ve introduced Brew Mobile Platform™ (Brew MP™)
- We’ve opened up a much larger market for your apps with many more carriers.
- We’ve streamlined the toolkit and made it easier to write and debug apps.
- We’re giving you access to low-level hardware functionality and getting out of the way so you can extend the platform to meet your needs.
- We’re helping you deliver more powerful graphics than ever before with optimization tools such as the Adreno™ SDK and Adreno Profiler.
- We’re looking for new ways to help you make more money more consistently than on other platforms.
And now we invite you to Uplinq™ 2010, our developer conference in San Diego from June 30 to July 1, to find out more about writing, publishing and monetizing your mobile apps. Here’s a peek at what’s in store for you:
Using New Tools
Learn about the new Brew MP Multiplatform SDK. It supports devices running Brew MP and Brew® versions 3 and 4 from a single toolset, with greater accuracy in simulation. We provide Visual Studio and Eclipse plugins for Click2Run and Click2Debug on both simulated and physical devices. Find out about developing Brew MP applications using languages like Flash and Lua, with live demonstrations. We’re staffing the show with the engineers who created the platform, so bring your toughest questions.
There will also be experts on hand to walk you through the Adreno SDK and Adreno Profiler, the tools you need to improve graphic performance within your Android, Windows Phone, Palm OS, Blackberry apps, and soon your Brew MP apps as well. Adreno GPUs are the graphics processing units at the heart of Qualcomm chipsets that allow you to deliver eye-popping graphics experiences on mobile devices around the world. We’re giving developers like you the power to change the way people experience mobile apps.
Making More Money
Hear how high-profile game publishers Sonic Boom, Glu Mobile and Digital Chocolate are taking their apps from micro-transactions to large revenue streams. Qualcomm’s 3Pre program (pre-integrated, pre-optimized, pre-distributed) brings together developers, ODMs, OEMs and operators to put core Brew MP apps onto phones before they’re sold. You’ll find sessions on open market handsets (OMH) and on how best to gauge the tastes of mobile consumers.
Meeting Carriers
Yes, it’s true: Operators want your apps and content. You can attend keynote addresses by the Chief Marketing Officers of AT&T and Verizon Wireless, and learn what they want and how best to work with them in their reverse pitch presentations. These reverse pitches are your chance to ask questions of and make connections with several other operators, including: Associated Carrier Group, Cricket Communications, nTelos, Pocket Communications, TIM Brazil, and U.S. Cellular.

Discovering Other Technologies
Uplinq 2010 is about more than just Brew MP. We’ll have sessions on Windows Phone 7, on open-source projects around Android, Linux Kernel, Chromeand WebKit and exciting new trends in app development, such as contextual awareness, parallel computing and augmented reality.
And if that’s not your idea of a good time, visit the exhibitors and see demonstrations in the Mobile Innovations Showcase, running both days. Bring business cards and make connections.

PERSPECTIVES
Demand for Mobile Apps and Content Suggest Continued Growth
With all the buzz out there about free apps and content, it is hard to believe that people are paying for items. It’s not only true, but our primary research* tells us that three quarters (74%) of mobile consumers across the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain have paid to download applications and content in the last 6 months! Seems like a great reason to work together to be sure our industry’s storefronts continue to be stocked with a range of apps and content.
The fact is that mobile consumers continue to use a broad range of mobile applications and content. In the US alone, mobile users accessed more than 40 different categories in Q1 2010 (source: comScore). Qualcomm’s primary research has also revealed that consumers are accessing not only the traditional mobile entertainment standbys, but also interactive and utility-oriented items.
And what categories of mobile applications and content are used almost every day by U.S. consumers? Sure, email, instant messaging, and social networking make the top tier list, but so do information, news, and entertainment. An analysis of comScore data from Q1 2010 reveals the following categories (listed in rank order) are used nearly daily by between 30% and 60% of U.S. mobile consumers:
- Business email
- Personal email
- Men’s magazine
- Major instant messaging services
- Social networking, blogs
- Horoscopes
- Weather
- Music
- Financial news or stock quotes
- Dating service
- News
Stay tuned for more insight on what mobile consumers want in application storefronts!
